A three-year-old child has been bitten by a dingo on K'gari, an Island off Queensland's south-east coast.

Investigations are under way after a 12-year-old boy was bitten by a tagged dingo on Queensland’s K’gari.

Two children and an adult were playing in the shallow water near Yidney Rocks about 12.15pm yesterday when a male dingo approached them from behind and bit the boy.

Nearby fishers ran to help, fending off the dingo with a stick.

The dingo moved away but followed the group back to their accommodation as the stick was left behind near the water.

The boy was treated by paramedics for superficial puncture wounds and a laceration.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers arrived to find the dingo still in the area and identified him from photos. 

Rangers are investigating the incident and will continue to monitor the dingo.

Visitors to K’Gari are reminded to keep children within arms reach, walk in groups and carry a stick, never feed dingos, camp in fenced areas and not to run if a dingo is sighted. 

In the year so far, there have been six high-risk interactions with dingoes, including biting, mouthing or lunging.

There were 23 of those interactions last year.
