A Texas man has been charged with murder after he called 911 to tell dispatchers he’d shot and killed his roommate, apparently because the man was “difficult.”

Douglas Ervin, 81, made the 911 call just after 9 p.m. on Thursday, KDFW reported. When dispatchers asked the man he shot was still breathing, Ervin replied, “Nah, he’s dead.”

Police arrived at the home in Richardson and found Ervin outside on the front porch. They asked him if anyone else was inside, and he told them, “The guy I shot and [another roommate,” an arrest affidavit says.

Investigators found Gregory Johnson, 59, dead outside a bedroom in the home. The third person was inside and not physically harmed. They found a shotgun at the scene.

During an interview, Ervin told detectives Johnson was a “difficult” roommate who did things like leave the front door open and the lights and water on. He said that he shot him when he walked past his room and made a rude comment.

Johnson was not approaching him or being threatening, he said, and he did not have a weapon.

Ervin was charged with murder and given a $200,000 bond.
