RINCON, Ga () — Within several weeks, Picket Fences Subdivision residents could see shovels in the ground for new emergency access road.

Hundreds of residents live in the Picket Fences subdivision, and it has one way in and one way out.  Here is the catch, a train blocks the only entrance and exit frequently with hour delays.

We spoke with Rincon Mayor Kevin Exley more about the process to make sure residents have a safe way to enter and exit in case of emergencies.

“What will happen is, it will be in the center of Picket Fences and then it will run to McCall Road,” Exley said. “What we will do is at the moment that a train stops in that neighborhood, we will have police and fire or police or fire at either entrance.”

First responders will be stationed at each end of the road to manage the flow of traffic in and out of the neighborhood, and it will remain open as long as the entrance is blocked.

“When I went out and talked with the residents there, the residents were not interested in a cut through road,” Exley said. “So, people would be cutting through, and it would be a lot of traffic in the neighborhood.”

He told News 3 that 75 homes is typically when developers would have to build a second entrance.

“Council over the years has just approved the developer to continue to build houses until the point that the developer completed the last house. Now, I think it’s above 200 without building that entrance or exit.”

The nearly $1M project is currently in the bidding process. He is expecting construction to begin within the next 45 days.

“A lot of people are very happy that they’re going to have a way out because they went through the struggle,” said Exley.
