A California fire captain was found stabbed to death in her Ramona home on Monday, and police “are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident.”

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Rebecca Marodi, who had been a firefighter for more than 30 years, according to KNSD.

Deputies were called to the scene on a report of an assault at about 9 p.m. Monday. First responders attempted to revive Marodi, but she was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to KFMB, Marodi lived in the Ramona home with her mother. While investigators said they believe Marodi knew her attacker, they have not explained how or said where the mother was at the time of the attack or who called police to the scene.

Riverside firefighters escorted Marodi’s flag draped body to the medical examiner’s office on Tuesday afternoon, KNSD said.

Marodi began her career as a volunteer firefighter in Moreno Valley in 1993, then worked as a seasonal firefighter in San Bernardino and Riverside from 1994 until 2000, when she became a full time firefighter. She was promoted to fire apparatus engineer in 2007 and captain in 2022.

“Her passing is a profound loss to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her,” Cal Fire said in a statement.
