Benedictine loses in first round, several others local teams advance

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The Benedictine Military School boys’ basketball team suffered a first-round playoff loss to Marist, 68-59, on Feb. 19.

The game was back and forth from the opening tip. The score was 22-20 in favor of Marist. Senior Caleb Jones impressed in the opening eight minutes.

The top scorer in the GHSA had at least eight points, which included a dunk in the open court that electrified the crowd.

Several other local teams also played in the first round of state playoffs.

Savannah High hosted Wilcox County and rolled, 75-39. The BlueJackets came in as the top seed in the region after winning the region championship on a Maki Joyner 3-point field goal.

Woodville-Tompkins is also advancing after a 73-64 win against Gordon Central. Woodville-Tompkins earned the No. 12 seed after falling in the region championship game.

The Savannah Country Day Girls’ team is advancing after a 67-43 win over Aquinas, but the Hornet Boys’ season ends after suffering a 66-43 loss to Paideia.

The Windsor Forest boys team is advancing after an impressive offensive effort led them to an 89-66 win over Riverdale.

Calvary Day bounced back after its region championship loss by defeating Fellowship Christian, 79-45.
