A “much-loved” and “valued” member of Rick Stein’s team was tragically found dead in staff accommodation last week amid concerns for his wellbeing. The young chef, in his 30s, died on Thursday, February 13.

Authorities were summoned to a residence on Grenville Road in Padstow at approximately 8pm following reports of concern for the welfare of a man at the address, which serves as staff lodgings for the famed chef’s company.

A representative for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the individual, believed to have been employed at The Cornish Arms in St Merryn, was pronounced dead at the location. His death is not considered suspicious, and his family has been notified.

An official statement read: “Police were called to Grenville Road, Padstow, at around 8pm on Thursday, February 13, following a concern for welfare for a man in a property. Sadly, a man in his 30s was declared deceased at the scene.”

Rick Stein, alongside his ex-wife Jill Stein, bought The Cornish Arms pub in 2009, pledging to maintain its traditional Cornish character.

The Rick Stein Group employs over 600 individuals and encompasses a variety of ventures including eateries, a culinary school, retail outlets, and accommodation, with the majority based in Padstow, reports the Mirror.

Ian Fitzgerald, managing director of Rick Stein Restaurants, expressed: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of our chefs on Thursday, February 13.

“There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but out of respect for the family’s wishes for privacy during this difficult time, we will not be sharing further details.

“Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends and all who knew him. He was a valued and much-loved member of our team and will be greatly missed.”

Rick Stein is celebrated for creating a food empire that encompasses an array of restaurants, retail stores, and hotels in the UK and overseas.

His childhood visits to Cornwall fuelled his passion, leading him to establish various ventures there as well as in Winchester, Sandbanks, Barnes in London, and even stretching to Rick Stein at Bannisters in Mollymook and Port Stephens, Australia.

At the age of 77, the TV chef has etched his name into the annals of British gastronomy. He is recognised for his exceptional eateries, bestselling cookbooks, and numerous stints as a television presenter.

Away from the camera, Stein lives in London but retreats on the idyllic shores of Cornwall and enjoys trips to Australia.
