BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — Due to snowfall on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as extremely cold temperatures, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and local power companies are asking customers to voluntarily reduce their power usage.

A news release from Bristol Tennessee Essential Services (BTES) stated that due to temperatures falling into the teens on Thursday and Friday, power demand will significantly increase. While the TVA can meet those demands, the release states that the 153 local power companies it supplies will be using energy-saving measures to conserve electricity.

Customers are also asked to reduce their power usage between 7-11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The best ways to reduce power usage are to lower the thermostat by one or two degrees, turn off non-essential appliances and lights and delay using high-energy appliances like washers, dryers and dishwashers.

“BTES will be reducing power usage at our facilities by adjusting thermostats, reducing lighting, and taking other steps to lower electricity consumption,” Clayton Dowell, CEO of BTES, said in the release.

The TVA and BTES will provide updates on the power situation on their social media pages.
