ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — The man who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler was sentenced to 100 years in federal prison.

Micheal Donivan White was sentenced in federal court on Friday after previously pleading guilty to multiple charges related to Chandler’s November 2021 death and White’s role in a methamphetamine conspiracy, according to a Department of Justice (DOJ) release.

Chandler was killed on Nov. 13, 2021, after responding to a known drug house on Orr Street in Big Stone Gap. Authorities said White attempted to flee in a vehicle but it became stuck. After Chandler approached the vehicle, White shot through the driver’s side door and window eight times.

Chandler was reportedly struck in the wrist and the abdomen below his bulletproof vest. He died later that night.

White was identified as a suspect and was later found at a Kingsport motel with the 9mm pistol that was used in the shooting, according to the DOJ.

“No matter how righteous our prosecution was or how just this sentence is, no amount of jail time can bring back Officer Chandler,” Acting US Attorney Zachary T. Lee said in a release. “Our only hope is that today’s sentence brings some level of closure to Officer Chandler’s friends and family, the Big Stone Gap Police Department, and the Southwest Virginia law enforcement community. To all of the men and women who worked tirelessly to bring Michael White and his co-conspirators to justice, the Department of Justice is eternally grateful.”

Multiple federal and local agencies were involved in the investigation.
