CHANDLER, Texas (KETK) — An elderly Florida couple appears to have been dropped off at an East Texas hotel after family members decided they “could not stay with them.”

The Chandler Police Department said they received a call of an elderly couple who seemed to be lost wandering around a hotel. A hotel employee said the woman was wearing a nightgown, a hospital band and no shoes.

“Officers quickly discovered the couple appeared to be suffering from conative deficiencies and clearly seemed lost,” the police department said. “Although the couple had a room reserved for two nights the couple had no luggage, food, money or their needed medication with them.”

Officials determined that due to their age, the couple could not care for themselves. The couple was identified as Pastor William McCann and his wife Mary McCann from Fort Myers, Florida.

“Due to an unknown reason, the family members decided the couple could not stay with them which resulted in the couple being placed and abandoned at the hotel without supervision or their needed personal items,” the police department said.

Los Hermanos in Chandler provided food to the couple until other arrangements could be made. Texas Adult Protective Services was contacted alongside a mental health professional.

This stems after the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a house disturbance the day before that involved the elderly couple, their son and their daughter-in-law.

“It was discovered that the son and daughter-in-law decided to pay for two nights’ stay at the Best Western in Chandler in order to remove the elderly couple from the residence, although it was later learned without law enforcement’s knowledge it appears the son and daughter-in-law had no intention of returning for the elderly couple,” the Chandler Police Department said.

As no criminal offense occurred when the sheriff’s office was at the scene, authorities took William and Mary to “prevent any further disturbance.” The son reportedly told deputies that he would soon take his parents’ belongings to the hotel. However, the following day those items did not make it.

When the son was asked by authorities if he would return for his parents, he told them he would not. Chandler PD said it appears that the couple was brought to the Chandler area from Florida by their son.

“Due to an unknown reason the son and daughter-in-law decided they could not care for the elderly couple which resulted in the couple being placed and abandoned at the hotel without supervision or their needed personal items,” the Chandler Police Department said.

A social worker confirmed that both have dementia and have since been taken to a hospital. Officials are now searching for a nursing home the couple can stay at.

“They’re super sweet, very loving. Her husband sings gospel to me and they did Bible study last night, it just warms my heart. I don’t understand who would’ve done that to them,” Taylor said.

At this time, the police department said there are no pending criminal charges.
