AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Sacred Heart is hosting the 17th annual Keeping the Dream Alive Interfaith celebration in Honor of MLK tonight.

The Progressive Religious Coalition holds this event to bring together people of all different faith backgrounds. Monday, the audience heard from a speaker why Doctor Martin Luther King Junior’s message still matters and applies today.

“It’s such a neat opportunity to remember that we all have far more in common than we do different,” said Millie Huff, Executive Director of Sacred Heart. “Particularly in today’s cultural climate, and so it’s a pleasure to host it here at Sacred Heart,”

At the event, there were around 14 clerics representing different faith traditions; the Davidson Chorale and the Augusta Players did an expert of their play ‘Ruby: The Story of Ruby Bridges.’

“There’s a worship aspect to it as well, and we have a quote in the bulletin that’s very important,” said Sid Gates, co-founder of the Progressive Religious Coalition of Augusta. “There will never be peace among the nations unless there’s peace among the religions. There will never be peace among the religions unless there’s dialogue among the religions. So, we think Co-worship is even better than dialogue. “

People of all different religions could experience other ways of worship together. Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize winner, was the speaker at the event.

“I’m a historian, and so I believe that in many ways what has happened, what is happening now has happened before, and we can learn from the past as we decide to make our way forward,” said Jon Meacham, Speaker.

Organizers told me the main goal for the evening was to spread hope to those who attended.
