Hilaria Baldwin Gets Candid About Alec Wanting Her To Sign A Prenup

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin’s relationship started back in 2011, and they raised a few eyebrows, as she was considerably younger than him. She was 27 and he was 52. However, the couple managed to overcome their age gap, and 14 years later, they are still together and very happily married with seven children.

Now, on the latest episode of The Baldwins, the new reality TV show that follows their daily life as a family, Hilaria opened up about how she was asked to sign a prenup and what she really thought about it.

Alec and Hilaria got married back in 2012, but before they tied the knot, a small but important disagreement arose. While they were planning their wedding, Alec requested Hilaria sign a prenup.

He had been married and divorced before, to Kim Basinger, with whom he shares 29-year-old daughter Ireland Baldwin, and that experience made him want to be cautious.

“After my first marriage, I said, ‘Let’s have a prenup.’ She wasn’t happy about it. It’s an awkward thing,” Alec said in a confessional during the last episode of their reality TV show, The Baldwins.

Hilaria, for her part, said that she was upset because she did “not understand quite what a prenup” was, “Because you are like, ‘After a certain number of kids, it’s this,'” she explained her confusion.

In the end, however, she agreed to it.

“I was like, ‘You know what? I’ll just sign it,’ which was probably very stupid of me back then.”

But perhaps this blind trust was what made Alec think he should offer the same to her because, in the end, they decided not to get a prenup. Hilaria said that, if put in that situation again, she would think it through more thoughtfully.

“Now, I would read it again, but, like, I just said, ‘I won’t sign it. I don’t really want to think about the end by the beginning.’ And then you were like, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to do it either.’”

The Baldwins About Sharing Their Lives On TV

Having your entire life broadcast on television has to be tough, but for Alec and Hilaria, it feels important. The two of them have been going through a rough couple of years after the terrible incident on the Rust set that sent Alec Baldwin to trial.

They described the experience as “empowering” to PEOPLE, and were happy to be able to choose what to share, even when it came to awkward subjects such as their prenup.

“It was an opportunity for us to actually speak. It was a really safe space.”

“And I think it was also very cathartic, almost like a diary, during a very unsure time of our life. That felt both terrifying and like it could get us through day by day.”

It was also a great way for them to work while still being around their children.

“We did the show because it’s in place of doing a movie or a play. Now I think to myself, ‘Am I going to be away from my kids five nights out of the week until 11 o’clock at night?'” Alec said.

“For me, work-related things really aren’t that critical anymore. I thought, ‘I get to spend time with my family.’”

The Baldwins airs on TLC on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET.
