Hernando County commissioners consider establishing their own DOGE

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) — Ryan Amsler presented an ordinance to his fellow county commissioners Tuesday, attempting to establish a Hernando County Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE.

“My main campaign promises were transparency, accountability, putting the residents first, and that’s what DOGE is all about,” he said.

Each county commissioner seemed to like the idea of creating a local DOGE, but some took major issue with the price tag.

“When we’re looking at government efficiencies, we want the citizens to give us input,” Hernando County Commissioner Brian Hawkins said. “We want those people to be involved in the process.”

“I just don’t feel comfortable paying $250K over an 18-month period to get that content,” he continued.

Hernando County resident Aja Moore said she likes the idea of more transparency and accountability from the perspective of residents like herself.

“Yes our budget is public record, but I think it would be nice to have citizens that break it down and explain it to other citizens because our politicians forget what it’s like to be an average citizen once they’re elected,” she said.

News Channel 8 reporter Nicole Rogers asked Amsler, “When it comes to DOGE, what’s your message to Hernando County taxpayers?

“That I take every dollar that they’re paying in taxes extremely seriously,” he responded.

So what comes next?

Commissioner Amsler said he will work with the county to write up a new draft that he plans to have done in the next month or so.
