Comedian and broadcaster Marty Sheargold’s Triple M radio show has been dumped after he made “disgusting” comments about the Matildas.
Sheargold and radio broadcaster Southern Cross Austereo said they had “mutually agreed to part ways”, in a statement released tonight.

“I fully understand the gravity of my comments,” Sheargold said.

“I’d like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation.

“I would also like to thank my immediate team for their hard work and apologise for the situation they now find themselves in.”

It was Sheargold’s second apology today after he made a series of degrading comments about the Matildas.

“You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls,” he said.

“All the infighting and all the friendship issues and ‘The coach hates me and I hate bloody training and Michelle’s being a bitch’.

“Now, I’m sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think of it so you can stick it up your arse.”

When the comedian’s co-host mentioned the Matildas were playing in the SheBelievesCup, Sheargold responded with “she believes in what? It better be men”.

Sheargold also said he would rather “rather hammer a nail through the head of my penis” than watch the Asian Cup tournament.

“Got any men’s sport?” he asked.

Sheargold first apologised in a post to Instagram.

“Any comedy including mine can miss the mark sometimes, and I can see why people may have taken offence at my comments regarding The Matildas. I sincerely apologise.”

It is the second example of offensive commentary that has emerged from the radio host this week.

A clip from Sheargold’s radio show yesterday surfaced online, where he made comments mocking reproductive health issues after he borrowed a “period heat pack” to use on his sore back.

“God don’t ladies carry on, Jesus Christ there is no end of it,” Sheargold said.

“Endometriosis, and this is controversial,” Sheargold said, as his co-host could be heard saying “don’t say it”.

“No, I am going to say it. It’s controversial. It’s made up.”

In late 2023 Sheargold was pulled off-air after making abusive comments towards women at an AFL grand final function.

Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said Sheargold’s comments about the female athletes “crossed the line”.

“They were just, you know, basically out of order and, and very, very unnecessary,” Sermanni said.

Matildas captain Steph Catley, who is currently in Colombia as the national women’s team prepares to faces the country, also slammed the comments.

“It is what it is, it has been said and I know there’s been apologies but it’s just completely unacceptable,” Catley said.

Nine-time Olympic medallist and fellow Triple M host Liesel Jones was brought to tears as she responded to the misogynistic comments on the air.

“I feel extremely sick … The comments are so hurtful against women’s sport,” she said.

“If there were little boys and girls in the car, please know that you are welcome to play sport, sorry I am upset to whatever level.

“The biggest thing we can ask for is for men to be on our side.”

Southern Cross Austereo chief content officer Dave Cameron said a new Drive host would be announced “in due course”.

“Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) takes its responsibility to listeners, shareholders, and clients seriously and its programming should align with the standards and expectations of its audience,” Cameron said.

“Right now, it’s clear this is a moment for reflection and review.

“Triple M, and the wider SCA network, will continue to take all necessary steps to support staff.

“Triple M acknowledges Marty’s contribution over the past four years, and we wish him well for the future.”
