WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – There was a major political showdown on Capitol Hill as House Republicans push through a multi-trillion-dollar budget plan by the slimmest of margins.

The bill passed largely along party lines, with just one Republican joining Democrats in opposition. Now, all eyes turn to the Senate, where the battle over spending and priorities is set to begin.

House Republicans took a major step toward keeping the government open, passing a budget bill after hours of tense negotiations.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) Is celebrating the bill he says he will re-shape the U.S. economy.

“We’re going to deliver the American first agenda,” said Johnson.

Here’s what’s in the bill: $4.5 trillion in tax cuts, $2 trillion in spending reductions, $4 trillion debt limit increase and more funding for border security & military.

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie was the lone GOP ‘no’ vote, arguing the bill adds to the nation’s deficit.

“Why would I vote for that?” Massie asked.

House Democrats united against the budget plan, as they walked down the Capitol steps to show their opposition, saying it hurts middle-class families.

“We will push back against the reckless Republican budget until it is buried deep in the ground, never to rise again,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

The next battle over this budget plan now shifts to the Senate.
