The View panel spirals into on-air spat as hosts argue over Trump

During a heated discussion on The View, Alyssa Farah Griffin forcefully interrupted her fellow co-hosts while they were discussing Donald Trump’s deportation policies.

On Wednesday’s episode, Sunny Hostin went on a passionate tirade against President Trump, accusing him of targeting only specific groups of illegal immigrants for deportation based on their appearance.

Her tangent was sparked by the group’s discussion about Trump’s $5 million ‘gold card’ visa for wealthy foreigners.

Hostin brought up the issue of Canadian immigrants entering the country illegally, suggesting Trump’s focus is solely on migrants crossing the Mexican border, a point that Griffin swiftly refuted.

‘I think what’s fascinating to me is yes, he ran on immigration, and he ran really on the southern border because we know we also border Canada and that’s actually the largest border, but they’re not really going into Canada and looking for those Canadian people that are kind of jumping back and forth,’ Hostin said.

The squabble then ignited when Griffin jumped in to refute the statement.

‘This is a misnomer. It’s not Canadians who come across the northern border,’ the former White House director of strategic communications asserted as Hostin tried to continue speaking.

‘The Northern border crisis, no, it’s people coming from other parts of the world – India, Mexico – there’s not a bunch of Canadians flocking. There’s probably more Americans going to Canada right now.’

Tensions skyrocketed as they continued to talk over one another. Hostin sternly interjected Griffin’s spiel to defend her argument.

‘Well, that’s not true because I spoke to [Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer] about it,’ she said before Griffin cut her off to say ‘that was a misunderstanding.’

The other co-host’s chimed in to tell Hostin and Griffin that is was difficult to understand them because they are both speaking at the same time – making it nearly impossible for either of them to get their points across.

‘Can I just finish what I was saying so I don’t lose my thought?’ Hostin calmly asked while Griffin continued to speak about the Canadian border.

In a brief break from the heated debate, Hostin continued: ‘The point is, he was all about immigration from the southern border and those immigrants, or those migrants, look a certain way.

‘So it seems to me it’s never really just about immigration. It’s about a certain type of immigrant and so now we have this -‘

‘Can I just clarify?’ Griffin – who could not hold her tongue any longer – interjected for the second time.

‘Can I finish talking?’ Hostin, now frustrated, fiercely replied as Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sara Haines intently listened.

‘So, it’s okay for Russian oligarchs to come over, it’s okay for people with money to come over, but it’s not okay to provide a path to citizenship, people who have been here, like the DACA recipients, for other people who look a different way, that’s the point,’ Hostin concluded as the audience applauded.

But Griffin made sure to get her final thoughts in: ‘So, just to clarify, because there is a border crisis on the northern border and it doesn’t get nearly as much attention as the southern. The numbers aren’t as high.’

She repeated her earlier claim that Canadians are not the people coming over the border, but people from Mexico and India who found it easier to cross from there than the southern border.

According to Border Patrol data, there were about 200,000 encounters at the northern border in 2024.

More than 12,000 of those instances involved Chinese migrants, about 8,000 were from Mexico and roughly 9,000 were Filipinos.

Approximately 3,000 of them were from Colombia and 1,000 encounters were from other nations. Canadians accounted for 36,000 of reported incidents.

Goldberg then tried share her perspective on the topic, simply stating: ‘I want somebody to make a decision about immigration.’

She went on to say the only reason immigration is declining is because Trump is ‘threatening people,’ which is when Griffin broke her silence again.

‘The same way Kamala Harris said “Do not come,” she went to the southern border and said that,’ Griffin said.

Echoing Hostin’s earlier plea, Goldberg responded: ‘Just let me finish now, this time.’

The comedian went on to describe America’s immigration system as a confusing ‘mess,’ making it difficult for people to navigate.

Later in the show, Goldberg addressed the crowd, saying the co-hosts were ‘feeling passionate,’ sparking their politically-driven verbal altercations.

Griffin, realizing the comment was likely a dig at her, responded: ‘I know it gets heated and I don’t mean to step on people when I do that.

‘I’m working on interrupting.’

Trump announced his plans to launch the ‘gold card’ program on Tuesday, offering wealthy immigrants who want to work in the US a path to citizenship.

The president said the card would replace the current EB-5 visa program and would cost about $5 million dollars per person.

‘We’re going to be selling a gold card. You have a green card. This is a gold card,’ Trump said to reporters in the Oval Office.

He described the new ‘gold card’ program as ‘green card privileges plus’ that would offer recipients a ‘route to citizenship’ in the United States.

‘They’ll be wealthy and they’ll be successful, and they’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people, and we think it’s going to be extremely successful,’ he said, boasting that it had ‘never been done before.’

He previewed the program as ready to launch in ‘two weeks.’

In the first month of his presidency, Trump deported about 37,660 people – which was much less than Joe Biden’s monthly average of 57,000 immigrants, Reuters reported.

Trump has ramped up efforts to support his strong immigration stance – including firing director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Caleb Vitello for failing to arrest enough illegal migrants.

The administration has also announced a bold plan that would allow officials to instantly expel migrants over fears they may spread highly-contagious diseases.

Internal documents obtained by CBS reveal plans to resurrect the controversial Title 42 policy – the same measure Trump used in 2020 to shut down the border during the Covid pandemic.

The plan would leverage the Public Health Service Act to allow fast deportations, bypassing standard immigration protocols that normally let migrants claim asylum even after crossing illegally.

This would mean officials would be able to rapidly deport migrants to Mexico, their home countries, or any third nation willing to take them.
