The State Attorney’s Office will review the body camera footage and determine the legality of the officer’s use of force.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that took place on the city’s Northside Feb. 11.

The suspect shot by an officer was identified as 29-year-old Michael Youmans, who, according to JSO, has a 13-page criminal history. The sergeant involved in the shooting was identified as Sgt. Ben McEwan. JSO stated that McEwan, who has worked for the department for 11 years, had not previously been involved in an officer-involved shooting.

JSO said Youmans took off after being pulled over on Jan. 30 for having dark window tint and missing tag lights on his vehicle. Twelve days later, McEwan and another officer made contact with Youmans and followed him to the 14000 block of Gossett Street. As they approached, JSO said Youmans backed his car into a driveway. McEwan then parked his patrol car in front of Youmans’ car to block him in. The sergeant then got out of his car and ordered Youmans to show his hands.

Video shows Youmans proceed to put the car in drive and accelerate toward McEwan. That was when the sergeant shot him with his gun.

Youmans’ vehicle drifted forward several feet until it hit a fence. Youmans eventually crawled out of his vehicle and complied with the sergeant’s orders. Rescue personnel were called to the scene to administer first aid to Youmans before being taken to the hospital.

Youmans faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, trafficking in MDMA, possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana.

The State Attorney’s Office will review the body camera footage and determine the legality of the officer’s use of force.

JSO’s body-worn camera footage can be viewed in the post below. As the agency notes, viewer discretion is advised.
