() Actor Mel Gibson, recently named one of President Donald Trump’s special ambassadors to Hollywood, joined an effort to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom following the devastating and deadly Los Angeles wildfires.

Randy Economy, who is spearheading the effort to recall Newsom, told ’s “The Hill” he doesn’t believe recent polling that shows 52% of Californians approve of the governor’s performance.

“I don’t agree with that poll. I just don’t,” said Economy. “I’m here on the ground. I see the pain and the anger.”

Twenty-nine people were killed in the Palisades and Eaton fires, which combined to burn over 37,000 acres and destroy thousands of homes and businesses.

Newsom has said that the LA wildfires, which broke out Jan. 7 amid the strongest Santa Ana winds in years, could be the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.

“We deserve much more and much better, and there is absolutely no adequate excuse the governor or mayor can make for this gross mismanagement and failure to preemptively deal with what they knew was coming,” said Economy.

The new recall effort is now the eighth attempt against the governor in six years.

“We’ve had one recall attempt against Governor Newsom that has hit the ballot,” said Economy. “It’s a long process to be able to get through that actual maze of bureaucracy and to get people to actually.”

Economy believes his group still has a shot at booting the governor out of office.

Why?

“Because of Gavin Newsom himself,” Economy said.
