“Based on the video that we saw, it was a pretty reckless event, and there were children around at the time, so we were lucky,” Sgt. M. W. Highfill with JSO said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man has died after a shooting in the 5000 block of Cleveland Road Thursday night.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the man was shot during a dispute, and there were children nearby.

“Based on the video that we saw, it was a pretty reckless event, and there were children around at the time, so we were lucky,” Sgt. M. W. Highfill with JSO said.

JSO responded to the scene at 2:14 p.m. and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Highfill said.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded and took the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“This is ridiculous,” Tyrone Williams, a neighbor said. “If you’re not going to protect the people who stay here and take their rent money, shut the apartment down.”

At this time, JSO does not know the cause of the dispute, or how the shooter knew the victim, Highfill said. They did not find the weapon at the scene, but are aware of other locations to search.

They have one person of interest detained, and they are searching for another. The outstanding person of interest may be in a white or silver Chevy Cruise with a black front bumper, JSO said. If you know anything, call 904-630-0500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

JSO’s Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit are continuing to investigate the scene.

Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community. However, due to the endangerment of children, JSO wants to remind parents to be aware of their kids’ whereabouts and who they are with.

Ron Armstrong, Founder and Executive Director of Community Support at Ground of GRACE, spoke with First Coast News about his call to action.

“We want change in communities that really need help that are underserved or overlooked,” Armstrong said. “Crime is a big problem in our community, and we just don’t have the resources. I would just hope that this will be a message to the city saying we just need some help over here.”
