Fire danger possible in Tri-Cities this weekend

(WJHL) — A dry weekend is expected in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.

As of Friday, in Tennessee, you can’t burn without a permit until May 15.

Before the forecast, one term that must be explained is “relative humidity.” Relative humidity measures the amount of water vapor in the air compared to the amount of moisture it can hold.

Expect relative humidity to increase this evening, which will help reduce the fire danger. Relative humidity values usually decrease overnight because cooler air has a lower capacity for moisture.

A few showers Saturday will help with fire danger in the morning, but dry air will filter in Saturday afternoon with breezy winds. Winds will be around 10-15 mph and gusts up to 30 are possible, making fire danger high again in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday will remain dry. The air will be drier than on previous days, but the winds will not be as breezy. Fire danger will still be relevant on Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening.

Drought conditions are not terrible for the region so that will help reduce the chance of fires this weekend.

Here are some helpful tips for this weekend.
