The Gainesville Police Department responded to an armed suspect who barricaded themselves in a trailer Saturday morning.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — 1:47 p.m. UPDATE- The Gainesville Police Department said a person was in custody.
A Gainesville Walmart was evacuated Saturday morning after reports of an armed suspect, police said.
Law enforcement responded “very active” scene at 2900 SW 42nd St. Saturday morning.
Around 7:50 a.m., the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) said witnesses heard shots coming from a vehicle in the parking lot. Police said a suspect barricaded themselves in a trailer. GPD said there were no reported injuries and did not provide an update on the subject at 12:30 p.m.
SWAT and the GPD Negotiations Team were in communication with the suspect, police said.
The sheriff’s office said the incident posed a threat to the area, prompting the parking lot and surrounding businesses to be evacuated, the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office said.
GPD said SW 42nd Street from Plaza Boulevard to SW 40th Place is blocked, and there is heavy traffic congestion. The agency encourages commuters to find alternate routes to avoid delays.
