CALHOUN COUNTY, S.C. () — A South Carolina sheriff says he believes a shotgun booby trap that killed a man was intended for deputies. The booby trap went off Monday when a man went to check on a relative’s vacant home. When the man opened the back door, the blast wounded him. He died later that day at a hospital.

The Calhoun County sheriff says he believes the booby trap was set up by a man who used to live at the home and, after allegedly committing a crime in Maryland, knew that deputies would be looking for him at the house.

Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers said, “This is my opinion. He knew the crime he was going to commit when he left here and went to Maryland, he knew he would be on the run, he knew that he would be tracked back to Calhoun County, he knew that we would be coming out to get him and I think he set it up for us.”

The suspect is in jail in Maryland. The Calhoun County sheriff says he plans to file charges against the man in connection with the deadly shooting.
