SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A man received a slew of charges on Saturday after leading the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) on a pursuit, striking three vehicles and assaulting a trooper, THP said in a report.

The report said that a THP trooper initiated a traffic stop after witnessing a hands-free violation on the driver of a Volkswagen Passat on SR 126 in Sullivan County.

The man was identified as 34-year-old Caleb Sims.

While the trooper was speaking with Sims outside of the vehicle, Sims allegedly assaulted the trooper and caused him to fall to the ground. Following the assault, Sims reportedly fled the scene, leading to a pursuit that moved toward SR 394 and then onto US 11E into Johnson City, where he entered Interstate 26.

Sims exited the interstate at SR 75 in Gray and collided with another vehicle before fleeing the scene and continuing the pursuit, according to the report. He then returned to Sullivan County, traveling on SR 75 and then onto SR 126. At the intersection of SR 126 and SR 394, he reportedly struck two more vehicles and again fled the scene.

The report said that when the pursuit reached SR 126 and US 11W, two THP troopers used their patrol cars to end it, and Sims’ car became disabled.

After the pursuit ended, Sims failed to comply with the trooper’s orders to exit his vehicle. The report stated that the troopers subsequently deployed a taser and removed Sims from the driver’s seat, where they then took him into custody.

Sims was charged with assault on an officer, DUI, driving on a suspended license, reckless endangerment and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident.

The report said tire deflation devices were deployed during the pursuit, but Sims avoided them.
