UPDATE: State Police, local fire departments recover vehicle from Sangamon River

Update at 3:45 p.m.

SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois State Police Troop 6 units recovered an abandoned vehicle from Sangamon River on Saturday.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., State Police units responded to Interstate 72 at Milepost 106 in Riverton for the report of a vehicle in Sangamon River. The vehicle was found just south of the location reported to and has been recovered and determined to be unoccupied.

Additionally, the Riverton Fire Department, Springfield Illinois Fire Department dive team and Springfield Fire Fighters Local 37 assisted in recovery efforts before the situation was turned over to State Police.

No lane closures were reported as a result of the incident. This investigation is open and ongoing, and there is no further information available at this time.


Update at 2:00 p.m.

SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — An unoccupied vehicle was found in the Sangamon River on Saturday.

At approximately 10:50 a.m., Riverton Fire Department was dispatched as requested by Illinois State Police for a vehicle that had been located in the Sangamon River under the I-72 East bound River bridge. The department responded with multiple apparatuses and personnel to the scene.

While En Route to the scene, the Springfield Illinois Fire Department dive team was requested to respond. Arriving units on scene then located a vehicle that was submerged under water in the river. Dive operations were set up, and divers from Springfield Fire “dove” the vehicle and were able to confirm it as unoccupied at the time.

The scene and vehicle have been turned over to State Police and all fire units have cleared. There is no further information at this time.


SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Multiple Sangamon County fire departments and one dive team are on scene for a water rescue situation in a river near I-72.

According to Springfield Fire Fighters Local 37, their crews are on scene for a water rescue in the river under the I-72 East bound River bridge near Riverton. Additionally, Riverton Fire Department crews and the Springfield Illinois Fire Department dive team are also on scene working on the incident.

Multiple fire apparatuses are stationed along the bridge and interstate, and I-72 is currently down to one lane of traffic heading eastbound. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes at this time if possible or proceed with extreme caution while crews are working under and on top of the bridge.

Fire Fighters Local 37 also said that an “All Clear” has been advised on a vehicle involved in the situation. This incident is still an active scene with multiple crews present. There is no further information at this time.
