New Zealand Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar has broken his silence after allegations he ‘grabbed the throat’ of a reporter during his side’s defeat to the Raiders in Las Vegas.

Agar, 53, who hails from the United Kingdom, was alleged to have assaulted a journalist for The Guardian at halftime during last weekend’s opening NRL round at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Agar had allegedly been walking from the coaches’ box at the Allegiant Stadium and past the media rooms where the alleged incident took place.

Sources close to the Warriors are understood to have said that the alleged disagreement relates to ‘an issue dating back multiple years’.

The feud between the two is said to have started in 2022 when the reporter in question wrote that Agar deserved to be axed as coach of the Leeds Rhinos.

On arrival back in New Zealand, Agar told Stuff that there there are ‘two sides to every story’ and that he will ‘talk when he is allowed to talk’.

Warriors CEO Cameron George is backing Agar and the coach’s version of the incident.

‘Richard and I have had an extensive discussion around the alleged incident. He’s given his version. And I think, in fairness to everyone we will let the CCTV footage show us exactly what happened,’ he told Stuff.

‘I certainly believe and trust Richard’s version. There’s a lot behind it as well. So we’ll just go through the process and come out the other end.’

NRL chief Andrew Abdo has confirmed the league is investigating the alleged incident.

‘The matter is of concern for us and if the allegations are true…the matter is under review by the integrity team,’ Abdo said.

‘The allegations are serious and we will have a look at all the evidence and make a decision really quickly.’

Agar has been working as an assistant coach under Andrew Webster since 2023.

Prior to joining up with the Kiwi outfit, Agar had spent three years working with Leeds, notably leading the Rhinos to their Challenge Cup Final victory against Salford back in 2020.
