'What's going to replace them if they're condemned?' Visitors question future of Bradenton Beach

BRADENTON BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — The bright red notices on storm damaged buildings in Bradenton Beach are surprising visitors who said they are concerned with the future of city.

Some of the notices have been up for a while, as the city makes notice of unsafe structures. Some notices said the structures are hereby condemned and must be demolished and removed. Others said the structure is unfit for human habitation and that it’s use, or occupancy, has been prohibited.

News Channel 8 On Your Side counted eight notices on buildings Monday. There was not an official number of notices available from the city. Visitors who saw the notices said it upset them.

“A little bit surprised at the length of time it’s taking to clean up some of the properties at some point,” said Rick Labelle, a visitor. “Very disappointing, and it is a little bit heartbreaking because my fear, just as a part-time visitor, is what’s going to replace them if they’re condemned.”

The cleanup is coming. City Building Official Bill Palmer said they’ve already had people come in and start the demolition process. Palmer said most of the structures aren’t feasible to elevate, and they have to regulate construction.

“You know, rebuilding to bring the community back, and the growth back and the tourism back, you know, that’s kind of what the goal is,” Palmer said.

There were lots of tourists, and vacation rentals seemed full Monday. Some visitors said they worry about what the future of Bradenton Beach may look like.

“This is just a very charming area, and I hope it doesn’t totally lose it as people maybe buy empty lots, condemn properties, then rebuild and decide they need a three or four story one or stretch the law a little bit on the height restrictions here on the island. That would concern me,” Labelle said.

Building officials said they are willing to work with property owners who need help but ask that they come forward as soon as possible.
