JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson City police charged a physician with aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery Tuesday after a patient reported he had raped her during an office visit.

A Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) news release states Dr. Atif Atyia, 68, was being held under a $50,000 bond at the Washington County Detention Center following the arrest.

Johnson City Police Department’s (JCPD) special victims unit began investigating Atyia on Feb. 19 following the patient’s complaint.

The unit executed a search warrant on Atyia’s practice on West Market Street, after which police investigators and the First Judicial District Attorney General’s office “worked swiftly on the case and presented it to the Washington County Grand Jury this week,” the release says.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the crime, the JCPD is asking any other potential victims to contact Sgt. Shane Williams with the JCPD Special Victims Unit at (423) 434-6110 or Crime Stoppers at (423) 930-6535.
