On this week’s episode of The Kardashians, an icon is being celebrated. That’s right, reality TV queen Khloé Kardashian is turning 40.
As Khloé has a busy week leading up to the big day, her family is also putting in lots of work. Will the celebration they plan be a warm welcome into the new decade — or simply a hot mess?
Kim Plans Khloé’s Big Bash
Kim calls Khloé to see what kind of party she wants, asking if it should be “ratchet” or have a theme. Khloé admits that she herself is still unsure of how she wants to celebrate:
I don’t really know what I want to do. But if I had to choose, [I’d want to] get wasted and just dance.
She jokes to the cameras that she doesn’t want to talk to anyone at the party, so certainly a sit-down dinner is ruled out. Meanwhile, she goes to see Kourtney, explaining to her that things are going well in therapy and that her therapist believes she has complex PTSD. “Literally, I take better care of other people than I do of me,” she says. This means that her birthday of all days should be about her and no one else.
Kim busies herself with planning Khloé’s party. Since her sister has always been obsessed with Dolly Parton, she decides on the theme of “Khloéwood.” With the help of event planners, they decide on decorations, a drink menu, and more. Kim is frustrated that she has to do this all on her own without help from her other sisters, who are either busy, out of town, or simply not interested in helping out.
As her birthday approaches, Khloé reflects that she has more work on herself to do, explaining she doesn’t want to bring baggage into her next decade. She also says she doesn’t want her daughter to get the wrong idea of marriage from observing her, and that she’d like to show what a loving relationship looks like to her.
In the spirit of doing more for herself, Khloé goes wine tasting with a friend, then even indulges in a round of mini-golf. When the producers ask her if she’s grateful she reconnected with Lamar, she says she’s still processing what it meant to her. It’s tough on her, because despite the love she has for him, she’s also aware of how much he hurt her family.
The Big Day Is Finally Here
When Khloé’s birthday rolls around, she spends the morning with her kids and gets a flood or birthday wishes from several people, including a video message from Dolly Parton herself. For her party, Khloé dresses in an all-denim outfit, including a denim corset. When Kim picks her up, they learn that Scott and Kendall won’t be able to make it, which frustrates them.
When Kim starts to doubt whether Khloé will like her birthday party theme, she grows frustrated again that her sisters didn’t help her. If they’d volunteered to take on some of the work, she would’ve been more open to hearing their opinions, but now it’s too late for any criticism since everything is already set in stone.
As Kim and Khloé ride to the party together, which is taking place at Sunset Studios, Kim starts to have second thoughts about some of her party choices. The others’ opinions are getting in her head, and as they get closer and closer to the venue she grows more and more nervous. She divulges to the cameras that she’s beginning to worry no one will like the event she’s put so much energy into creating:
Oh my god, now I’m so insecure thinking that everyone’s going to hate it.
That said, when Khloé enters the party, she’s completely taken aback. She loves the theme, the details, all of it. “Every single inch is pure Khloé perfection,” she says. “It’s f****** perfect.” It’s not long before she gets up on the DJ table and commands all of her guests to get on the dance floor and dance.
Kylie agrees that the party was some of Kim’s best work. She jokes that she doesn’t know what kind of “energy” was happening, but that things were wilder than usual. Kim agrees, saying that she even took a turn on the dance floor, something that she never does.
At the end of the party, there’s still one huge surprise waiting for Khloé. Out of nowhere, the DJ announces there’s a final surprise for her, and suddenly Snoop Dogg appears on the stage, performing a private concert for her. Khloé is ecstatic, saying that she loves Snoop so much and is so touched that he came. She knows that she has Kim to thank for such a special night.
Kris says that Khloé is truly a singular individual, the type of person who always looks out for all of those around her before looking out for herself. The rest of her family members reflect on their memories of Khloé, all of them agreeing that she is the funniest, kindest, and most thoughtful one in the bunch.
Khloé embraces the new year on a high, telling the cameras that her “first moment” of her forties is already better than all of her thirties combined. In the teaser for the next episode, we see that Kim and Khloé are headed to a trip to India. It seems like the adventures continue for her in this next decade. “We are not in Calabasas anymore,” she jokes to the cameras.
