CLEANING poo out of Britain’s rivers is the key to Labour beating Nigel Farage, a Cabinet Minister vowed today.

Environment Secretary Steve Reed said voters flirting with Reform need to have pride restored into their towns and cities.

He insisted disenchanted supporters will come back to Labour if they can see real progress in ridding waterways and streets of filth.

Mr Reed told The Sun: “Cleaning up our rivers will play a key role in defeating Reform.

“Farage doesn’t care about sewage. Reform didn’t even mention it in their election manifesto.

“Labour’s new Water Act gives regulators the teeth they need to block unfair bonuses for polluting water bosses and bring criminal charges against lawbreakers.”

It comes as Mr Farage yesterday accused Sir Keir Starmer of “giving up on attacking” the Tories and instead setting his sights on the anti-migration challenger party.

He told TalkTv: “It just seems to be Reform, Reform, Reform.”

Mr Reed acknowledged that voters in left behind towns and villages, particularly on the coast, are looking to alternative parties because their surroundings have become less beautiful and inspiring.

Sewage overflows and filthy streets have caused a loss of hope and pride in local communities.

In 2023 there were 3.6 million hours of spills – a huge rise on the 1.75 million hours recorded in 2022.

The Environment Secretary pledged to claw back disenchanted Brits by making waterways clean and sparkling.

He said: “Fat-cat water bosses lined their pockets with multi-million-pound bonuses – money that should have been used to clean up our waterways.

“We will unlock over £100bn of private sector investment to fund new sewage pipes and water treatment works to end the Tory sewage scandal once and for all.”
