Michael Polansky didn’t have a massive engagement ring when he first popped the question to Lady Gaga.

“Michael actually proposed to me with these blades of grass,” the pop star, 38, revealed in an interview with the BBC published on Thursday, March 6. “A long time ago, we were in the backyard, and he asked me, ‘If I ever proposed to you, like, how do I do that?’ And I just said, ‘Just get a blade of grass from the backyard and wrap it around my finger and that will make me so happy.’”

The suggestion was a bittersweet one for Gaga, as her yard previously served as the venue of her late friend Sonja Durham’s wedding. (Durham died of cancer in May 2017.)

“There was so much loss, but this happy thing was happening for me,” she told the outlet. “To get engaged at 38 … I was thinking about what it took to get to this moment.”

The proposal served as inspiration for her new song “Blade of Grass” from her album Mayhem, which dropped on Friday, March 7. “Come on and wrap that blade of grass / Around my finger like a cast / ‘Cause even though the church burned down / I’ll be your queen without a crown,” she sings in the chorus. “I’ve been so lonely in this field / Fightin’ a battle with no shield / Come on and wrap that blade of grass / And we’ll make it last.”

Gaga shared more insight into the track during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe released on Thursday. “I wrote ‘Blade of Grass’ ‘cause I remembered the way his face looked, and I remembered the grass in the backyard,” she said. “And I remember thinking, ‘He should use that really long grass that’s in the center of the backyard.’”

Gaga confirmed her engagement to Polansky, whom she began dating in 2019, while attending the Paris Olympics last summer. In footage shared via Instagram in July 2024, Gaga introduced Polansky as “my fiancé, Michael,” while meeting the Prime Minister of France, Gabriel Attal.

In a September 2024 interview with Vogue, Gaga revealed that the couple got engaged that April after a day of rock climbing. “The missing piece in my life was having real love,” she gushed. “My mom met him and she said to me, ‘I think I just met your husband,’ and I said, ‘I’m not ready to meet my husband!’ I could never have imagined that my mom … found the most perfect person for me?”

Fans later got a glimpse at Gaga’s engagement ring, which is estimated to be worth $500,000 or more, in a December 2024 trailer for Apple TV+ and Apple Music’s A Carpool Karaoke Christmas special.

Gaga opened up about her private romance in a new interview on the Australian radio show “Will & Woody,” sharing on Friday, “It’s like, so cute when I’m with my man, when I’m with Michael, we’ll be doing something and if I’ve been working all day, and then I have another idea, he’s like, ‘Just go do it.’ Like, he knows I have to go write the song.”
