McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — A federal grand jury in South Texas has indicted 10 Mexican nationals and two men from Guatemala on charges of assaulting two correctional officers, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei announced.

The grand jury in McAllen handed up the charges against Osman Joel Hernandez-Pavon, 22, and Roger Emmanuel Lemus, 42, both of Guatemala. The following Mexican nationals also were charged:

  • Bryan Hernandez-Ruiz, 25
  • Francisco Antonio Hernandez-Mora, 27
  • Ivan Ramirez-Zapata, 40
  • Adrian David Guzman-Salas, 28
  • David Ramirez-Bautista, 21
  • Roberto Fabian Garza-Castaneda, 49
  • Jose Alberto Resendez-Hernandez, 27
  • Jose Ramos-Lerma, 45
  • Ruben Gonzalez-Balderas, 29
  • Oscar Ambrocio Hernandez, 25

They were scheduled in court to face a federal magistrate Thursday.

Officials say the dozen men in January aided and abetted the assault of two corrections officers at the East Hidalgo Detention Center in the border town of La Villa, Texas.

If convicted, each face up to eight years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.

“The Department of Justice has zero tolerance for violence against law enforcement officers,” Ganjei said. “The grand jury has returned an indictment that alleges a serious attack on two corrections officers, and, rest assured, the Southern District of Texas will hold accountable all those found guilty.”
