JUPITER, Fla. — Brandon Nimmo’s anticipated return to the Mets lineup has been pushed back additional days.
The outfielder was supposed to play on Sunday in the Grapefruit League. However, he had a problem with his right knee and couldn’t run beyond 85 percent capacity. Manager Carlos Mendoza shared that the player received a gel injection to alleviate the issue.
Nimmo, who has only two plate appearances this spring, will begin to ramp up after resting through at least Monday, according to Mendoza.
Mendoza mentioned, “We’re still aiming for Opening Day. We have enough time to work on his condition, and he will have plenty of opportunities to bat. That’s why we decided to address this issue promptly.”
Nimmo underwent an MRI exam on the knee last week that showed no structural damage.

He spent most of the winter refraining from strenuous activity on his left foot, after receiving a PRP injection for plantar fasciitis.
Mendoza was asked at what point he might become concerned about Nimmo’s status to begin the season.
As the Mets played an exhibition game against the Marlins, Mendoza emphasized, “As we get closer to Opening Day, if the player is still not running or playing baseball at full capacity, we may need to have tough discussions.”

Kodai Senga will pitch Sunday in a minor league game.
Clay Holmes will start in the Grapefruit League against the Nationals at Clover Park.
Holmes — who for now is on the same schedule as Senga — pitched in a minor league game in his last appearance while Senga started in the Grapefruit League.
