JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – A phrase, an item and a location — these were the only elements given to 16 teams to create their short film during the fourth annual 52 Film Fest.

The competition’s name comes from the 52-hour time limit given to the teams. Along with the time limit, the teams were given three elements to include: a line of dialogue, an item, and a location.

This year, the teams illuminated the Tweetsie Trail with lights, cameras, and actors for 52 hours, which presented various challenges.

“Every single year [it’s] something new,” Kasey Williams with Uncut Gems said. “Something goes wrong, something goes right.”

“It’s a very intense competition,” Paul Fine with New Moon Productions said. “Get to do with all the daily challenges of weather and things we can’t control and just work the best we can and make a movie out of it.”

One of those challenges was finding a way to incorporate all three requirements into the film. However, the teams viewed that as a way to be creative.

“I’ve learned that coming in with an idea is not the way to go,” Williams said. “You just have to take those things and create something.”

“When I see us getting those kinds of criteria, I don’t see it as a restriction,” Jay Pollard from West Ridge High School said. “But more like a way for us to express our creativity in brand new ways.”

The teams turned in their films Sunday morning. On Saturday evening, the teams met at the Wallace Theatre to screen all 16 films, the most the competition has had in all four years.

Each team had the chance to show off their films and see the work of their peers.

“Just to watch these amazing filmmakers and these amazing creators,” A.J. Gottschalk with Uncut Gems said. “High School students, college students, some people are just brand new to it.”

For the team from West Ridge High School, this experience serves as inspiration for future endeavors.

“I also see it as something that we could possibly look up to, especially if we’re going to continue doing this kind of stuff in college.”

Team Uncut Gems won “Best in Show,” and Williams won “Best Actress.” Williams said the team’s collaboration helped create their award-winning film.

“We all definitely bring something different to the table,” Williams said. “And it’s so fun to work in a way where we all hold the same weight.”
