A DERANGED father has been sentenced to nearly two decades in prison after forcing his adopted daughter to jump on a trampoline in 110-degree heat as a punishment.
Eight-year-old Jaylin was found dead by police on August 29, 2020, after her adoptive parents, Daniel Schwarz, then 44, and Ashley Schwarz, then 34, deprived her of food and water and made her jump on a trampoline during a blazing West Texas summer day.
Authorities said the temperature on the trampoline was about 110 degrees, and the ground temperature was about 150 degrees when little Jaylin died of dehydration at her home in Odessa.
Jaylin’s death was ruled a homicide, and her adoptive parents were arrested and charged with capital murder in October 2020.
The Ector County district attorney announced on March 6 that Daniel Schwarz, now 48, pleaded guilty to the lesser crime of manslaughter in connection to his adoptive daughter’s death.
He was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
“This outcome is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our prosecutors and the Odessa Police Department in seeking justice,” the DA wrote in a Facebook post.
Ashley Schwarz will be spending the rest of her life in prison with no possibility of parole after being convicted of capital murder in connection to Jaylin’s death in May 2023.
CRUEL PUNISHMENT
On the morning of Jaylin’s death, the Schwarzes refused to let her eat breakfast and forced her to jump on the trampoline non-stop for a prolonged period, according to police.
Authorities said that the girl was also not allowed to drink any water because she was not jumping.
Jaylin’s little sister Jayde, who was also in the Schwarzes’ custody, was also punished by being forced to jump on the trampoline, local CBS affiliate KOSA-TV reported.
Jaylin was pronounced dead at the scene after the Odessa Police Officers responded to a medical call to the house.
BIOLOGICAL MOM ‘NEVER HAD CLOSURE’
Alysha Anderton, the biological mother of Jaylin and Jayde, told KOSA-TV that she lost custody of her daughters due to an addiction issue.
Ashley Schwarz is Alysha’s step-sister, and at first, the biological mom approved of Ashely and her husband taking care of the girls.
Alysha had visitation rights, but she said that the Schwarzes stopped her from seeing her daughters.
Then, she got the heartbreaking news.
What happened to little Jaylin?
Eight-year-old Jaylin was found dead by police on August, 29, 2020.
Jaylin was in the custody of her adoptive parents, Daniel and Ashley Schwarz when she died.
The Schwarzes forced Jaylin to jump on their trampoline in 110-degree weather in the West Texas city of Odessa.
They also refused to let Jaylin eat breakfast or drink water as part of her punishment.
Jaylin was pronounced dead at the scene after police officers arrived to respond to a medical call.
Daniel and Ashley Schwarz were both arrested and charged with capital murder.
Ashley was convicted in May 2023 and was sentenced to life without parole.
Daniel pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, the district attorney announced March 6. He was sentenced to 18 years.
“What upsets me the most is that I never got to see her alive again,” Alysha said.
“When they took them, I never got to say goodbye. So I’ve never had closure for the past four years.”
‘SHE WAS SO TINY’
Alysha expressed regret for not being able to bring her daughters home to her before it was too late.
Alysha recalled how small her daughter looked in her casket, saying, “I was surprised that it wasn’t more than dehydration.”
“Because the little girl that I saw in the casket did not look like an 8-year-old girl. She was so, so tiny. She was so tiny. She was so tiny,” she added.
“I’m so, so sorry that I didn’t bring you back home like I promised you that I would,” the mom said.
“That was the most important thing that I could say to her was that I’m sorry for everything that I have put you through.”
“It’s not fair to her or to her sister – but I hope she knows my heart now and she knows that I was trying very, very hard to get to them and I could have saved her,” Alysha added.
Little Jayde was placed in the custody of the Schwarzes’ babysitter, according to KOSA-TV.
