CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Early voting will start Friday for Champaign County’s April election, and as the ballots are being prepared, one person running for office found something wrong. This morning, the sample ballots you can find on the county clerk’s website had a mistake.
Tony Bruno, who’s running for the Champaign School Board, said the sample ballot had the wrong rules to vote for the two-year term positions that are open. He said someone sent him a picture of the voting form from earlier this morning where it said to pick one person when it should’ve said two.
Bruno reached out to County Clerk Aaron Ammons, who said the issue is already resolved. Ammons emphasized this mistake will not affect early voting, mail-in ballots or election day. Bruno said he’s happy it was taken care of so quickly.
“I am feeling good about the election,” Bruno said. “I think it’s really important that elected officials can be held to account and that when there’s a problem, they respond promptly and transparently and tell the public we made a mistake. We’re all human, when you make a mistake, it’s just important to fix it, and I have confidence that the election is going to go off without a hitch.”
Even though this specific issue didn’t affect early voting for the consolidated general election, it will now start on Friday instead of Wednesday for a different reason. Ammons said it’s because of the late filing of an amended ballot certification by a municipality.
Ballot certifications are what municipalities file with the clerk’s office as the official language to go on the ballot for their jurisdiction.
Those voting for the city of Champaign’s school board will select a total of five people. Three of those will be for a full four-year term, and the other two will replace members who stepped down for two years.
