Liam Payne’s tragic death in October last year left the music world reeling. Fans everywhere joined together in mourning the One Direction alum, and his family and friends are very grateful for the love they expressed for him. But aside from the grief and pain, Liam’s death also caused huge legal problems.

Several people who were there with him during the last days of his life have been charged for his death, including his closest friend, Roger Nores. And while the charges against him have since been dropped, some people still believe he’s partially responsible. Now, Roger is finally opening up about his close relationship with Liam and what went on during that time.

One of Liam’s closest friends, Roger Nores, an American-Argentinian businessman who was his companion during his trip to Buenos Aires, was blamed by fans and faced charges for his death, which were later dropped. He was accused of being negligent, but ultimately, Argentinian authorities ruled that he had no responsibility over what happened.

Now, five months after his passing, Roger opened up during an interview with Reuters about his friendship with him and how worried he was about Liam in his last days.

“As a friend, you see them having a drugs problem and you do what you can but at the end of the day it’s their decision,” he said.

“You start seeing a chain of events and it was just bad luck, it happened in a way that ended in tragedy.”

And he had a front seat to that horrible turn of events, as he saw them almost constantly toward the end of his life.

“The last six months of his life, we were together every single day, all the time, along with our girlfriends at that time.”

As if losing his dear friend wasn’t enough, Roger Nores had to deal with being blamed for Liam’s death, as people believed he had some kind of responsibility over him. Roger and his team insist that, while he cared deeply about Liam, he was not his manager or “therapeutic companion,” hence had no control over what he did.

However, Roger understands why fans turned on him so quickly.

“When someone you grew up with, with their voice, their songs, and all of a sudden they’re gone, it’s hard to deal with. They’re trying to find an explanation.”

He’s glad, however, that the charges against him have been dropped, and he’s able to finally deal with his grief properly.

“It’s been a real weird experience, and it’s been obviously really hard,” Roger said about the investigation, adding that the hardest part was not being able to “say goodbye to Liam,” whom he called “one of my best friends in the world.”

However, while he seems to be forgiving of the young fans, he’s currently suing Liam’s father, Geoff, for defamation, claiming that he gave the authorities sworn statements that were “false, contained material omissions, and many parts were not based on personal knowledge.”

And despite the charges being dropped, he’s not backing down and will continue to pursue the lawsuit until he feels vindicated.

“[That lawsuit]’s going to stay there until I get an apology. Simple as that,” he stated.

Our thoughts go out to Liam’s friends and family during this difficult time.
