He likely will slot in as a backup to incumbent 49ers starter Brock Purdy.

Jones, 26, spent last season with the Jaguars after he was traded by the Patriots following Bill Belichick’s dismissal.

Jones, as the backup to Trevor Lawrence, managed to appear in 10 games, with seven of those games being starts, due to Lawrence’s concussion and subsequent season-ending surgery to fix an AC joint injury.

Jones threw for 1,672 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while going 2-5 as the Jaguars’ starter.

His 39.8 QBR represented his best since his Pro Bowl rookie season in New England.

His presence provides the 49ers with a seasoned alternative behind Purdy, who had Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen as backups last season, with each getting one start.

Leading up to the 2021 draft, there was significant speculation that the 49ers might opt for Jones with their first-round pick. However, they eventually traded up to the third overall pick to secure Trey Lance.

Jones eventually fell to the Patriots at No. 15, spending an up-and-down three years with the organization that saw him reach the playoffs once but get benched for Bailey Zappe at points during 2022 and 2023.

Now on his third team in as many years, Jones gets another fresh start.
