SAVANNAH, Ga. () – A vigil was held Wednesday evening for a 28-year-old that was shot and killed just before midnight on Friday.

Duquan Kitchens was shot March 7, just before midnight on West 37th Street Lane and Burroughs Street. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His loved ones honored his memory in the form of a candlelight vigil.

“It really, really, really hurts so bad that my baby is gone but I can remember everything good and bad about my son,” said Kitchens’ mother, Tammy Kitchens.

Kitchens’ neighbor called police just before midnight after finding him lying down unresponsive in the alleyway of West 37th Street Lane after he was seen walking with an unidentified person.

She, along, with his family, friends, and other neighbors of nearly a decade remembered him with candles, balloons, stuffed animals and hand-written notes at the very spot where he spent his last moments alive.

“My neighbors they came out and they showed so much support at a time,” said Tammy, “It brings joy to my heart knowing they’re helping me.”

Tammy spoke on behalf of the group to and told us she is not interested in knowing why her son was killed, only in keeping his memory alive.

“I don’t know why. I’m not going to ask questions. I cannot judge God, but he decided to bring him home, and he was called home,” said Tammy. “My son is a good son. He’s not a perfect son, but he is a good son.”

She and several other loves ones described Duquan as humorous and being “the life of the party.”

“My son was the type of person who would do things to make people laugh. Quan, he was no angel, but he was funny,” said Tammy.

Tammy is asking for the public’s help with Duquan’s funeral fund because she does not have insurance.

“I just ask if anybody who knows me, and knows my heart, can help me bury my son. That’s all I ask,” said Tammy.

To raise funds for Kitchens’ funeral fund, the family is accepting donations via CashApp.

No arrests have not yet been made in connection to this crime. It is under investigation by SPD. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at (912) 234-2020.
