DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — After a house fire in Danville killed one and injured three others, the city’s Fire Chief is pushing for working smoking alarms.

The fire happened early Wednesday morning near Fletcher Place and Fletcher Drive. One person died and three were hurt. Officials said there were four people inside the home during the fire: Three people made it out, but 85-year-old Judith A. David lost her life in the fire.

Danville Fire Chief Aaron Marcott said when crews arrived, they saw heavy fire and smoke coming from the home. Crews tried to enter the house three times but weren’t able to get through because of the high heat conditions. Once they got the fire under control, they were able to get in and find David.

Marcott said seeing another report of non-working smoke detectors is a problem. He said their goal now is finding a way to connect with the community to get these installed.

“The childhood education, things that you do, and we’ve seen them work, right? Like you get little wins here and there where they do work,” Marcott said. “You know, a young kid will get his family out or he’ll get them to do a family plan, so he knows where to go when he gets out. I’m really stressing that message, like you just need to get out.”

He said they’re hoping they’ll be able to find more funding that will help with this project. If you need a smoke alarm, reach out to the fire station in your area and they’ll come out and install them for free.

Marcott also said the three people who were hurt in the fire suffered from smoke inhalation and are being treated at the hospital. The status of their conditions is unknown at this time and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
