A retired Kentucky reserve deputy was found died Wednesday after he was found with a gunshot wound early Wednesday morning, and his son is in custody but has not been charged in the shooting.

John McQuillen, 65, worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for more than 10 years, retiring in 2021, WAVE reported. A few hours after his body was found, Louisville Metro Police arrested 43-year-old Brandon McQuillen, saying he was in the area of the homicide investigation and in possession of an AR-15.

The younger man has been charged with felon in possession of a firearm and violating an emergency protective order/domestic violence order. The arrest citation specifically identifies him as the son of John McQuillen but does not say if his arrest is connected with his father’s murder.

Court records, however, say that John McQuillen was granted an EPO against his son in 2018, according to WHAS. Last year, the son took out an EPO against his father.

Outside the apartment complex where John McQuillen’s body was found, investigators also found a suspicious package that was detonated by the bomb squad.

Brandon McQuillen was ordered held on a $10,000 bond on Thursday with a return court date of March 21.

Brandon McQuillen was arrested in 2020 when he allegedly chained a woman to the ceiling inside a home after she told him she didn’t want to see him anymore, according to WAVE. The arrest report says he put a chain around her neck and padlocked it to the ceiling, used a taser on her, beat her with a pool cue, and punched her in the face.

McQuillen’s former roommate called police, and he fled the scene. He was charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault, receiving stolen property, two EPO violations, and distributing porn. He was allowed to plead guilty to much lesser charges and was sentenced to three years in jail.
