A judge sentenced Karlotta Dowdy to house arrest and probation after a deadly hit-and-run, leaving the victim’s mother believing justice is not served.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A woman who pleaded guilty to leaving a crash that killed an Ed White student athlete in a Sept. 2024 hit-and-run will not serve time in jail and that student’s mother believes the sentence she received isn’t enough.

Sitting in the stands cheering on her daughter’s flag football team is still apart of Tiereny Williams’ routine. Despite her 17-year-old daughter Alaysha no longer running down the field with her teammates.

“I know this is something she would want, she was always a team player,” said Williams. “She excelled so much the first year she was definitely coming back for a second year.”

The senior at Ed White High School died after being hit by three cars while crossing from Blanding Blvd. to Cedar Hills Blvd. in Sept. 2024.

According to police, two of the drivers stayed at the scene while one driver, Karlotta Dowdy, drove away and was arrested two months later.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Dowdy to a year of house arrest, one year community control and three years probation. The 41-year old pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury. avoiding a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

“That was hard for me, it was like ripping a scab off a wound. She still gets to live her life. my daughter don’t i won’t be able to see her again,” she said, “I’m not able to see her senior activities. She was not able to take her senior pictures. I won’t be able to see her walk across that stage.”

As Williams is left with just the memories of her vibrant, young daughter, she said she’ll always be her biggest fan.

“Laysha was so outgoing, loveable. Alaysha was my everything,” said Williams.

According to the state attorney’s office, Karlotta Dowdy would have not been charged if she would have stayed at the scene.

Investigators also say they could not determine which car involved in the crash caused Alaysha Williams fatal injuries.
