On-and-off weather makes for on-and-off headaches at The Players Sunday

One fan said she was stuck, not moving, for two hours during the four hour weather delay.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — It was a bit of an unusual sight for Sunday at the players – fans heading home in the dark.

That’s because an hours-long rain delay pushed the finish to almost sunset. The on-and-off weather led to on-and-off headaches for folks dealing with the traffic.

Players spectator Janell Lamantia made the most of a less-than-stellar weather day for The Players.

That wonderful time ended when she got back in her car when The Players entered a weather delay and encouraged fans to leave.

“It’s a very strange situation that we’ve been sitting in the parking lot for two hours and not moving,” Lamantia said while trying to navigate an exit.

Lamantia says she’s gone to the Players on-and-off for years, always expecting a slow exit, but never a standstill.

A St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said it’s usually constant flow, but trying to get everyone out at once in the rain was challenging.

“You could turn off your car to preserve gas, but I was starting to get a little alarmed, wondering how long we’re going to be stuck here,” Lamantia said. “It’s normal to creep out, that’s expected, but to sit for two hours and not have any movement is very strange.”

Lamantia says officials eventually opened a different exit, breaking up the bottleneck and she was finally able to make it home.

However, just as the line to exit finally cleared up, The Players announced the weather delay was over, and it turned into a line to get back in.

The Players will extend into Monday with a three hole aggregate playoff.
