CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department has released more information about the shooting that left one person hospitalized on Sunday.
Officers responded near the intersection of Third Street and Burr Oak Court just after 3 p.m. for a “shooting with injuries.” When they arrived, they found a vehicle with damage from gunfire and a 31-year-old Champaign man with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The officers gave the man medical aid until he could be brought to a nearby hospital. He is in stable condition, according to the Champaign Police Department.
After investigating, officers learned that the victim was inside a vehicle when 22-year-old Zaire Herman of Champaign opened fire, hitting the victim. Herman then fled on foot.
Officers searched the area, found Herman nearby and arrested him. He faces initial charges which include aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault, and unlawful use of a weapon. As the investigation continues, Champaign Police said additional charges may be added.

The Champaign Police Department added that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
