SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – Two Spartanburg County teachers have been arrested for abuse towards special needs students, deputies said.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, two investigations were issued by the Special Victims Unit. Both were teachers for the Spartanburg County School District 7.

The first incident occurred on February 17, at Mccarthy-Teszler School. 44-year-old Mary Simmons Dobbing had hit a special needs student, 17, in the head twice.

Deputies said other staff members had witnessed Dobbing hit the student and immediately reported it to the school resource officer.

Dobbing was arrested on March 15 and was released on bond, on the conditions that she is trespassed from the victim’s residence and isn’t to have any direct or indirect contact with the victim or their family, deputies said.

The second incident happened at EP Todd Elementary School, on March 7. The teacher’s assistant, 23-year-old Elizabeth Mae Wypych, was seen dragging a 4-year-old special needs student down a hallway by their wrist, deputies said.

Deputies said that incident was witnessed by other faculty and was immediately reported to the school resource officer. Wypych also confessed to doing so, according to deputies.

Wypych was arrested and was released on bond, with the condition of no contact with the victim.
