DaShawn Harris says his best friend was just weeks away from his 30th birthday when he was shot and killed Wednesday.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A shooting Wednesday afternoon near a BP gas station on Atlantic Boulevard and St. Johns Bluff Road left one person dead and another injured.

DaShawn Harris, a witness to the incident, recounted the terrifying moments as gunshots erupted.

“All we hear is gunshots,” Harris said. “I start running. I took off through the woods. I ran around. I hid in the car dealership over there. I came back and I see my best friend laying on the ground dead.”

Harris described the man who was killed as a devoted father just weeks away from his 30th birthday. Harris said the other man, who was shot in the leg, is his cousin.

“He was a great father,” Harris said of his best friend. “He didn’t do nothing wrong. He worked. He took care of his family and everything. He didn’t deserve that.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls around 3:25 p.m. regarding shots fired near the gas station located at 10675 Atlantic Blvd. When officers arrived, they found the two victims, both in their 20s, with gunshot wounds.

JSO investigators confirmed that multiple firearms were involved in the shooting. However, they have stated that the incident does not appear to be gang-related. As of now, no suspects have been detained in connection to the shooting.

Harris, who has experienced loss due to violence before, expressed his frustration.

“We used to just fight it out and be friends the next day,” Harris said. “Now you gotta just shoot and kill people. People got family, man. His kids don’t have a father. So whoever, if they do see me, hear this. I hope they really think about what they did and they killed an innocent man.”

JSO is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and contact them at 904-630-0500.
