Prince William Reveals the 'Superstition' He Follows Watching Soccer Games at Home With George, Charlotte, and Louis

Just like many other sports fans, Prince William has certain superstitions he follows during a game. For the Prince of Wales, 43, when his favorite soccer team is down, he gets his three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, involved.

William, who is a big supporter of England’s Aston Villa soccer team, revealed the “superstition” he follows when watching games at home with he and Kate Middleton’s three kids. Speaking to The Sun following Aston Villa Champions League win on March 12, 2025, the 42-year-old royal admitted that he’ll have George, 11, Charlotte, 9, and Louis, 6, change seats if things aren’t looking good.

“If I’m home alone with the children, I probably don’t have the pre-match pint but I do have a bit of superstition about where I sit when I’m watching them,” William said. “If we’re not doing very well, I start moving [a]round the house quite quickly and I put the children in different positions hoping that’s going to change our luck.”

William saw Aston Villa’s big win at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, alongside some of his closest friends. So, chances are, there were no seat changes for George, Charlotte, and Louis at home. That is, unless William’s method of changing the team’s luck has worn off on of the young royals.

Going to an Aston Villa game as a kid sparked William’s interest in the soccer team

So, how did William become a fan of Aston Villa? It all started when he went to a game as a kid. “I had some family friends who took me to my first Villa game when I was younger because they are big Villa fans,” William said.

“With the camaraderie among the fans and the chanting and the singing, I just felt like I belonged there,” William explained. However, it wasn’t until 2016 when Aston Villa became relegated to the Championship League that his passion for the team really intensified.

“I kept an eye on Villa from then on but didn’t get too involved initially,” he said. “But Villa being relegated to the Championship [League] in 2016 got me even more interested, strangely.”

William loves online soccer forums

When he’s not watching soccer games—at home or in-person—William enjoys going on online forums. Not only does he like to see what other fans are saying, he does make the occasional comment.

“I like going on the forums, I can be on there for ages,” the future king said. “I listen to what other fans have to say and give them my opinions.”

William continued: “I get quite into it, definitely. It’s important to have that debate.” As for his username, William didn’t share his online moniker.

So look for William at Aston Villa games and on fan forums. And know that when the team’s playing, he could be watching the game alongside George, Charlotte, and Louis, and having them switch seats depending on the score.
