Jacksonville authorities upgraded the couple’s charges to manslaughter and murder after the toddler’s death.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A couple previously charged with child neglect after the “brutal” death of a toddler had their charges upgraded to manslaughter and first-degree murder, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.

Officers responded to a home on Taurus Circle North on Sept. 10 last year for unresponsive 22-month-old Zamora Foe. The child was rushed to Wolfson Children’s Hospital where doctors discovered multiple injuries, JSO said.

Zamora died eight days later. On Dec. 4, the death was officially ruled a homicide after the medical examiner discovered the child died from blunt force trauma and had methamphetamine in their system, JSO said.

The mother of the child, 20-year-old Zayla Goodwin, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter. Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Nathaniel Davis, was charged with first degree murder, two counts of sexual battery, aggravated child abuse and tampering with evidence.

Despite Goodwin’s recount to police of what happened to Zamora, a First Coast Child Protection Team member noted on a report that any reasonable caretaker “should have known to seek medical attention for a child in this condition.”

“The degree of anticipated pain experienced by the child, and the various fractures to [her] legs, the caretakers Goodwin and Davis failed to seek the medical attention that a reasonable caretaker should have under the circumstances,” the warrant reads.

JSO said it will work with the State Attorney’s Office to obtain the “harshest punishment possible” for Goodwin and Davis.

If you suspect abuse, it is your obligation to report it. Call JSO (904.630.0500) or the state’s child abuse hotline at 1.800.96.ABUSE.
