SAVANNAH, Ga () — The wife of the innocent man killed during a police chase on Tuesday is speaking out for the first time, and she is remembering the man she calls her soulmate.

Married for 25 years, Kathy Lewis said her husband Darren, was taken from this earth too soon.

“He was a veteran, he was a deacon in church, he was as a son, a brother, a father, a grandfather, a brother-in-law,” Kathy said. “He was a man of God; a man of integrity and he was my husband.”

was first to report the name of the victim, 60-year-old Darren Lewis. He was about to turn onto Liberty Parkway when he was hit by a car that was fleeing police.

“I would describe him first as humble,” she explained. “He was so humble. He was a jokester. He was that person that you like to be around. He was positive. He was a role model. He was that man that every girl dreamed of.”

We are told their journey together started in Savannah, Georgia.

“My sister always say it was like skin on skin,” said Kathy. “When you saw him, you saw me and everybody who loved me loved him. When I hurt, he hurt.”

Darren, a father of two children, loved them with all his heart.

“Oh my God, he was that father,” she continued. “My son often tells me how he learned so much from my husband. He often tells me how my husband was such a role model.”

Kathy said it will be tough without her soulmate, and she’ll never stop celebrating the legacy he leaves behind.

“Even when I wanted to give up, he just says, ‘you got to go’, she said. “He pushes me. He encouraged me.”

She trusts her faith during this dark hour, as she feels his light will shine brighter in the days and years to come.

“I will continue to strive to keep his spirit alive by doing interviews like this, by being a voice in the community to keep him alive because the world and the community needs to know that there are great people out here”
