SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A mother and grandmother are facing simple battery charges after jumping into a fight between two students and attacking two administrators at a local school.

The attack happened after a fight between two eighth-grade girls at Oglethorpe Charter School on March 12.

“Two students got involved in an altercation. They fought. The parents were called,” Dione, who told that she is close to one of the two girls involved, said. Dione requested that not use her last name in order to maintain the privacy of a student.

She said that the girl she knows, who she refers to as student number one, ended up being attacked by the mother and grandmother of the other student.

“A teacher brought student two up to the office,” Dione said. “Now all three of them are in there with student one by herself. No protection, no security officer was there or anything. They immediately got into it again, and mind you, the mother and the grandmother attacked, jumped into the altercation. The assistant principal tried to protect student one. They ended up attacking him as well. He suffered injuries.”

reached out to the Savannah-Chatham County School System to confirm, and they said in part in a statement, “The two students saw each other in the office and began fighting again. The mother and grandmother then got involved and then attacked the principal and assistant principal while they attempted to break up the fight.”

However, the grandmother that was arrested called after this story aired to deny the school’s account of events.

She spoke with exclusively off the record and ultimately decided not to give a statement on the record, per her attorney.

“The young lady said all she saw was fists in her face, blows on her back, grown women attacking a child,” Dione said. “At that point, you’re an adult. You know right from wrong.”

Both women were arrested and charged with simple battery and disorderly conduct.

However, those close to the student one said that’s not enough.

“Her father ended up taking her to the hospital. She sustained cuts, bruises over her face,” Dione said. “Student one doesn’t even want to come back to school in fear for her safety and her life.”

She told the school said there were no cameras in the office and, therefore, no footage of the incident.

“I thought they had security officers at each school. The officer that was supposed to be there I was told was not there,” she said. “The Board of Education and the school dropped the ball on this young lady because she should have been better protected.

Dione and her family are now calling on the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System to implement new safety measures, including keeping students separated after a fight and putting security cameras in spaces like the front office.
