ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced a change in the traffic pattern on the Hurricane Helene-struck part of Interstate 26 in Unicoi County.
Currently, one lane is open in each direction between mile markers 39 and 40 in Erwin using the westbound side of the interstate.
But beginning Tuesday, traffic will be moved to the eastbound side of the interstate.

According to TDOT, after the traffic shift:
- The I-26 East exit ramp to Jackson Love Highway (Exit 40) will reopen.
- The I-26 West exit ramp to Jackson Love Highway (Exit 40) will remain open.
- The entrance ramp from Jackson Love Highway (Exit 40) to I-26 West will be closed. Motorists will need to access I-26 West at Erwin-Jonesborough (Exit 37).
- The 10-foot width restriction for all vehicles will remain in place. Those vehicles are prohibited from traveling on I-26 in this area.
The traffic shift will allow for the construction of a permanent westbound bridge over the Nolichucky River. A portion of the eastbound and westbound bridges were destroyed during flooding by Hurricane Helene in September.
Drivers are asked to use caution and expect delays in the area.
