SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) Court documents reveal the woman accused of killing her roommate with insulin in an attempt to claim a rumored $1.5 million life insurance policy had allegedly texted the victim, saying, “If you dying would get me out of this mess and darkness I am in now, I would take it!”

The revelation comes in newly released court documents charging the suspect, Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, with first-degree felony aggravated murder and second-degree felony obstruction of justice.

Randall was arrested late last week, about seven months after police allege she killed her 38-year-old roommate, Kacee Lyn Terry.

Prosecutors say Randall was in a “dismal financial situation” and would complain to Terry about her finances. Terry allegedly reassured Randall, saying she was the beneficiary of a $1.5 million life insurance policy.

Court documents say both Randall and Terry had discussed using insulin to cause death many times since 2020 with Randall allegedly consistently urging Terry to do it. Randall, a registered nurse, would procure insulin, allegedly telling Terry she “can give you insulin over and over until it works … I will come help you.”

Other text messages allegedly included Randall saying “Someone (should probably be me) should stay with you and continue to give you doses so it will actually stay low and you can pass.”

On Aug. 15, 2024, authorities responded to a medical emergency where Terry was found unresponsive. Randall allegedly claimed that Terry had a “Do Not Resuscitate” order and she was Terry’s power of attorney.

According to court documents, Terry did not have a life insurance policy.

Investigators were also unable to find a DNR order or court documents giving Randall power of attorney. Terry was also reportedly healthy with no history of diabetes. Police say her friends, family, co-workers, and doctors did not describe Terry as being suicidal.

In the months after Terry’s death, Randall allegedly continued searching for the million-dollar life insurance policy and deleted hundreds of text messages between the two. When confronted by investigators about the deleted messages, Randall allegedly said she “didn’t want it to look like what she was being accused of.”

Randall is scheduled to make her initial appearance on Monday, March 24.
